This course has two objectives. Firstly, it is a ‘taster’ of what service design is via a practical approach in learning and experiencing some of the methods it draws upon. This will enable the students to experience these methods first-hand, and understand what service design is, and could be. Secondly, this course provides a framework to engage with design more deeply. The nature of service design is catalytic in highlighting complexity, systemic and human-centred issues, enabling students to deepen their existing understanding of the role, agency and purpose of design. These two objectives run parallel in shaping the weekly learning activity, assessment tasks and outcomes. The emphasis within this course will be on guided, independent and peer-learning. You will be encouraged to further explore and examine aspects of service design that are relevant to your own field and topic of interest.
